During my time in Seattle and Orcas i delved a bit into the world of Espresso. (what better place then Seattle?) I got a glimpse of the potential there is in this drink if it is prepared with care and some elusive artistic science. However after three weeks of research and practice on my father’s espresso machine i think i may be more befuddled then i am barista, but it tasted good along the way….. enjoy.

The espresso station in my dad’s kitchen

My first latte

Pulling a shot

“Espresso con panna” or espresso with whipped cream. Very delicious!

First macchiato

Another macchiato attempt

Cafe mocha

First attempt at pouring latte art (with old coffee)

Another attempt at latte art

Now the pros: A to go latte from Herkimer cafe in Seattle, note the rich caramel color and very fine milk texture. :)

My first real venture outside of Quito… I head southeast to the small town of Baños, so named for it’s volcanic hot springs.

Termas la virgen

I rented a bike and rode down towards the Amazon basin along the “route of the waterfalls”

Pilsener: Ecuador’s national beer

Parque central in Baños

for being a small town Baños has some fantastic grafitti
